I got a dry erase board a few weeks ago. I was thinking it would help me be more productive since I keep not writing stuff down. I asked around to see if anyone had one I could have. So Anna gave me one. That thing is huge. But it's exactly the same size as my desk. So what I did is I put it on top of my desk and now I have a desk I can write on. I think that was one of my best ideas in a long time. Then I bought some markers and eraser. I've been writing notes on the board like crazy. I was thinking it would be even better if it was a pane of glass because I read that the dry erase markers can write on glass. Then I could also slide papers and stuff under the glass to have something like templates.
I think what also makes me use this more is that writing with markers is fun.
The board doesn't exactly fit perfectly on my desk though, because of the frame. So I'm wondering if I can take the frame off so the board will lay flat and then I wouldn't have to worry about putting weight on the desk.
I'm thinking I should get those desks that have a surface, and then have a pane of glass on top of them, then package them with dry erase markers and erasers, and market them as dry erase desks. I wonder if someone's already done that.
Also, if you need to clean off an old dry erase board, vinegar, windex, or rubbing alcohol all work. I had to use all three because there was a picture that the vinegar wasn't working on, but windex had no problem with. Then I used the rubbing alcohol to get the last few stubborn spots.
When writing my list of events on the board, I realized why I don't use calendar programs. They always have way too much stuff to enter just for one date. Like you'll add an event and it has a bunch of form fields to fill out. So that means lots of tabbing and clicking to fill out stuff. So I came up with an idea to have a calendar program that just takes text input and then figures out the event on its own.
You would enter something like 9/5 David's Birthday and then it would auto figure out the date (from almost any date format you use) and it would see the word birthday so it would add it to the birthday category and make it an all day event and make it recurring. It would also do that for holidays. Anything without a time would just be all day. For recurring events you'd just write yearly or monthly or whatever in the text field. Maybe have it where the category is denoted by brackets if it's not an obvious category. So something like 9/1 10:30am - 11 Meeting with Bob [Meetings]. The program would of course have to make best guesses for parts where info was left out, like in that last example it would assume 11 to mean 11:00am based on the 10:30am start time. It would also assume you meant the same day. If it was a multiple day event, then you'd just have to enter the extra info to be more specific.
If something like that has already been made, then will somebody point me to it? Thanks. And if that hasn't already been made, then don't steal my idea... or at least give me money if you're going to steal my idea. And sorry if I'm stealing someone else's idea.
